Fall in Love with Mums: The New England Way!

by Sep 15, 2023Buying Mums, Chrysanthemums, Fall Garden, New England Mums

There’s something quintessentially ‘New England’ about the sight of brilliant-hued chrysanthemums—better known as mums—dotting doorsteps and gardens as the crisp autumn air settles in. Their fiery colors echoing the spectacular fall foliage, mums have carved out a special place in the heart of New Englanders. Here’s a closer look at why mums are the region’s beloved fall emblem.

A Vibrant Color Wheel

Mums hold their own grand spectacle in the autumn, becoming the true stars of the show as most flowers take their final bow. Their breathtaking array of colors—ranging from the deepest burgundy to sunny yellow and pure white—mirrors New England’s famous fall foliage. This fall-blooming floral troupe creates a dramatic finale to the region’s growing season, bursting with color just when other floral players have exited the stage. New Englanders, with their love for the vibrant autumnal palette, can’t help but fall head over heels for these charismatic blossoms.

The Hardy Survivors

The New England climate, especially as winter looms, can be unrelenting and frosty. But mums don’t mind—they’re the floral embodiment of the rugged, stoic New England spirit. They thrive despite frosty temperatures, symbolizing endurance and resilience, characteristics New Englanders admire and strive for themselves. Their hardiness is a reassurance, a whisper in the wind saying, “Winter’s coming, but we’re ready.”

Nostalgia in Bloom

Growing mums in New England isn’t just a horticultural hobby; it’s a cherished tradition. Generations of New Englanders have been nurturing these plants, so mums are often associated with sweet nostalgia—of childhood homes, of grandparents, of times past yet warmly remembered. Planting mums each year is like unearthing an old photo album: it’s an affirmation of continuity, a link to one’s roots.

A Spectrum of Personalities

Mums are not a one-size-fits-all flower. They come in numerous shapes, sizes, and types—from the pompom-like button mums to the dramatic spider mums. This versatility is a part of their charm and a reason why they’ve become so integrated into New England’s fall gardening tradition. Just like the diverse population of New England itself, there’s a mum to suit every preference and personality.

A Symbol of Optimism

In many cultures, mums are seen as symbols of longevity, cheerfulness, and even immortality. In the vibrant yet transient season of fall, these meanings gain special resonance. As mums bloom amidst falling leaves, they seem to whisper a hopeful message: beauty endures, life persists, and after every winter, spring will surely follow.

In conclusion, mums aren’t just a flower in New England; they’re a symbol. They encapsulate the region’s essence—its rugged spirit, its vibrancy, its respect for tradition, and its inherent optimism. As long as there’s a chill in the air and a pumpkin spice latte to be had, you can bet there will be mums in New England. And we’ll continue loving every bit of their brilliant, blooming spectacle.

I purchased a Pointsettia before Christmas. It is now the 2nd week of February and it is still beautiful as the day I bought it. I have never had one last this long. Still enjoying it!
